CHATT, Thomas J.

When Thomas J. Chatt, 73 failed to come to his supper at the usual time Monday evening, Mrs. Chatt became alarmed, thinking there must be something wrong.  Around 6:30 the family asked for help and a posse of about 20 citizens formed a searching party.  About 8:30 his body was found in a bean field on the Tom Taylor farm at the west edge of Hillsboro.  Mr. Chatt had been mowing weeds south of US 136 and was thought to have been on his way home. They were able to track him along the edge of a corn field and where he had crossed over into the bean field which was west of his home. The body was found by Marion Lighty and Bronson Bever.  Charles Fishero, of Veedersburg, Fountain County coroner was called and gave the cause of death a heart ailment. The body was removed to the Crumley Funeral Home.  Thomas J. Chatt was the son of James and Susan Loretta Rich Chatt and was born on a farm in the Scott’s Prairie neighborhood near Hillsboro on April 12, 1882.  He was married to Mabel Ramsey on Aug 18, 1910. He was a member of the Hillsboro Christian church, the Masonic Lodge of Hillsboro and the Community Booster Club. The greater part of their married life had been spent in Fountain County.  He has been Town Marshal for a number of years, a position he held at the time of his death.  Surviving besides the widow are five sons: John and Roderick at home; Ronald of Indianapolis; James of Veedersburg and Lawrence of the US Air Force Base at Tacoma, Wash; four daughters, Mrs. Thelma Higgins of Veedersburg; Mrs. Mary Harmless of near Rockville; Mrs. Sarah Johns of Hillsboro and Miss Lyle Chatt of Danville, Ill; three sisters: Mrs. Martha Harding of Hillsboro; Mrs. Dora Lowe of Atlanta, Ind; Mrs. Emma Rennick of Judson Ind and six grandchildren.  The funeral service will be held at the Crumley Funeral Home in Hillsboro at 2 p.m. Friday July 29.  The Rev. Austin Smith the Christian minister will have charge and burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.  There will be a Masonic service. The family requests flowers be omitted. – kbz
