Veedersburg – William Lowell Cates, 84, of Veedersburg, died at 9:30 p.m. Sunday Aug 30, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Danville, Ill. Mr. Cates taught for the Attica Logan Township Schools, Veedersburg Elementary School and Marshfield Elementary School. He also was a rural letter carrier for the postal service. Born Feb 8, 1914 in Fountain County, he graduated from Covington HS and Indiana University. He married Ruth Wilkinson Lawson June 29, 1936. She died in 1987. He married Doris Janeway Shield Oct 20, 1990 and she survives. Mr. Cates was a member of Coopers Chapel Church, Wabash Senior Citizens, and Veedersburg American Legion Post 288 where he had served as chaplain. He was a charter member and past president of Kingman Lions Club. He served in the Navy during WWII. Surviving with his wife are two stepsons, Terry Shields of Veedersburg and Richard Lawson of Newburgh; three stepdaughers, Mrs. Harry (Kathryn) Harrison of Veedersburg; Mrs. Tom (Lea Ann) Taylor of Lafayette and Marla Hauk of Veedersburg and a brother, J. Fred Cats of Covington.
