Covington – Schuyler L. Cates, 71, died Thursday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, Ill where he had been a patient since Sunday. He sustained a broken leg in a fall Saturday in the yard at the home of a daughter, Mrs. William Howard in Covington. He was a distributor for the Johnson Oil Company for 20 years before his retirement. He also was a former school teacher and rural mail carrier. He was married to Mary Shoemaker who died in 1912 and Mary Robb who died in 1940. He was a member of the Masonic and Knights of Pythias lodges. Survivors are four sons, Lewis and Charles K of Covington; Harold L of Cicero, Ill and Lt. Leroy Cates of Cherry Point, NC; five daughters, Mrs. Samuel Green, Alvin, Ill; Mrs. Louise King, Crawfordsville; Mrs. Mary Eleanor Salts, Marshfield, Mrs. Delores Howard, Covington and Mrs. Martha Davan, San Diego, Calif; two sisters, Mrs. Etta Bailey, Lake Charles, La; and Mrs. Hazel Bair, Fairplay, Colo and a brother, Bert of Los Angeles. - kbz

Schuyler LaTourette Cates, 71 died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday Aug 26, 1954 in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville where he had been a patient four days. He was born Nov 14, 1882 in Fountain County, Ind son of Prior and Martha Lindley Cates. His first married Mary Shoemaker who preceded him in death and then Mary Dobbs who died Oct 1, 1940. Surviving are 9 children: Lewis of Covington; Mrs. Samuel Green of Alvin; Harold L. of Cicero, Ill; Charles K of Covington; Mrs. Louise King of Crawfordsville; Lt. Leroy Cates of Cherry Point, NC; Mrs. Mary Eleanor Salts of Marshfield, Mrs. Delores Howard of Covington and Mrs. Martha Davan of San Francisco, Calif. Services were at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home Sunday with burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery. – kbz
