Mrs. Lillie J. Cates, age 84, a native of Fountain County and a former matron of the Fountain County Home, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday, May 6 (1963), at the residence of Robert Prather in Cayuga where she had made her home for the past one and a half years. Mrs. Cates was born May 18, 1878 in this county, the daughter of Jasper and Alchey E. Hobart Spinks. She was married to Prior (Cap.) Cates June 30, 1895 and he preceded her in death Feb. 9, 1958. She was a member of the West Liberty Church of Christ and was matron of the Fountain County Home from 1934 to 1942. She had lived in the Covington and West Liberty areas for many years before moving to Cayuga 15 years ago. She is survived by two sons, Fred Cates of Kingman Rt. 2, principal of the Perrysville High School and a member of the Covington School Board, and Lowell Cates of Kingman Rt. 1; one granddaughter, Mrs. Virginia Gates of Long Beach, Calif., and one great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and three children. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon, May 8, at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home here. The Rev. Lowell Barnard, assisted by the Rev. Ed Zimmer officiated and burial was in the West Liberty Cemetery, south of Covington.
Cayuga, Ind. - Mrs. Lillie J. Cates, 84, of Cayuga, died at 8:15 a.m. Monday (May 6, 1963) at the Robert Prater residence in Cayuga where she had made her home the past year and one-half. Born May 18, 1878, in Fountain County, she was a daughter of Jasper and Eleanor Hobart Spinks. She was married June 30, 1895, to Porter Cates who preceded her in death Feb. 9, 1958. Surviving are two sons, Fred of Kingman Route 2 and Lowell of Kingman Route 1; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband and three children. Mrs. Cates was a member of the West Liberty Christian Church. She had resided at Cayuga the past 15 years and formerly resided at Covington and West Liberty. She was matron of the Fountain County Home from 1934 until 1942. The body is at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington where friends will be received after noon Tuesday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with burial in West Liberty Cemetery.
