Dessa B. Cates, daughter of Joseph M. and Lear Waggoner Summers, was born in Jackson Township, Fountain County, Indiana July 13, 1886 and departed this life March 21, 1949, aged 62 years, eight months and eight days.
On November 18, 1906, she was united in marriage to Millard Cates, to which union two children were born, a son, Keith of Kingman, Indiana, and a daughter who died in infancy.
Besides her husband and son, she is survived by two grandchildren, Carolyn and Dale,; her mother; one sister, Mrs. Gertrude Hallett of Waynetown; three brothers, Byron of Tangier, Cyril of Kingman and Marx of near Wallace; also a host of nieces and nephews, more distant relatives and friends.
At the age of seven, she moved from Jackson Township to Fulton Township, Fountain County, attending the schools and growing to womanhood in that vicinity where she spent most of the remainder of her life.
Having a cheerful and kindly disposition, she was always ready to extend a helping hand and give a world of encouragement to those about her.
She was loyal to her principles and to her family and home, where everyone was welcome who came or sought refuge there. She was interested in the activities of the community being a member of a number of civic organizations and the Eastern Star and Royal Neighbors Lodges. – thanks S&E
