William S. Carter, 84-year-old Kingman man died early Thursday August 6 following injuries sustained the day before when a barrel of fuel oil fell on him. Death came in St. Elizabeth Hospital and was attributed to crushing chest injuries. Mr. Carter was helping two of his sons level a fuel oil tank at the home of Mrs. Irene Jones in Cates. His sons, Don and Ray Carter, operate the Shell Oil Company in Kingman. They were using a jack to level the tank. The jack slipped and fuel tank toppled on Mr. Carter. He had been a farmer and worked everyday in spite of his advanced age. He often helped his sons. Born May 16, 1880, in Orange County, he was the son of John T. and Jane Weeks Carr. He was married Aug. 13, 1900 to Alice Shell, who died in 1954. Survivors include four sons, Ray, Don and Hugh of Veedersburg, and William Jr. of New Castle,; two daughters, Mrs. Josie Brown, Fortville, and Miss Mary Carter Indianapolis. Funeral services were Sunday afternoon August 8, at the Kingman Christian Church with the Rev. Larry McMillan officiating. Burial was in Centennial Cemetery with the Woodrow Funeral Home in charge.
