Minnie Carpenter, 68, of 718 East St, Monticello died at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday July 25, 1995 in Green Hill Nursing Home, Fowler. She had been in failing health for the past year. Mrs. Carpenter was a homemaker. Born April 24, 1927 in Athens, Greece, she was the daughter of Takvor and Ebroubi Koskoskian. She was educated there, attending college one year. In 1944, during WWI at the age of 17, she was taken from her homeland by German SS/Gestapo troops who discovered she was fluent in 7 languages and took her to Germany where she was held as an interpreter. Liberated by US troops in 1946, she was taken to an American hospital where she worked for the near year. There she met Charles Carpenter a military police sgt with the US Army and they were married Oct 15, 1947 in Furth, Germany. She came to the US in 1947 and became a citizen on May 23, 1957. She had lived in Monticello since 1947. Mrs. Carpenter was a frequent speaker to groups and clubs, recounting her experiences of WWII. She was a member of several church groups and homemakers club. She enjoyed returning to Greece for extended periods. Surviving are a son, Dr. Charles W. Carpenter of Arlington, VA; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Julieanna) Johnson of Boswell; a sister, Perous Xirokosta and brother, Emesto Kokoskian, both of Athens, Greece, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Takvor. Candlelight memorial service was held on Tuesday at Monticello Christian Church. Her wish was to return home to rest with her family in Athens, Greece where a memorial service is being planned. Family requests donations please be made in the memory of their mother to the American Diabetes Association, 222 S. Downey Ave, Indianapolis.
