Mellott - James Monroe Carpenter, 91, a resident of the Mellott community all of his life, died at 5 a.m. Saturday in the Ben Hur Nursing Home in Crawfordsville. He had been a patient in the home for four years. He was born Jan. 12, 1870, near Mellott. His parents were Daniel and Elizabeth Death Carpenter. He lived on the farm where he was born four miles southwest of Mellott all of his life. In 1896, he married Ollie M. McGee of Mellott. He was a charter member of the Fountain County Farm Bureau and a member of the Mellott Congregational Christian Church for 69 years. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bernice Haines of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Harold Shultz of near Mellott; a son, Hardin Carpenter of Mount Vernon; a foster daughter, Berta Miller of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Blanch Ogle and Mrs. Edith Shade of Newtown, and a brother, Daniel Carpenter of Winterhaven, Fla. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday in the Crumley Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery near there. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Sunday.
