Mellott, Ind. - Mrs. Florence Carpenter, 95, of Mellott, died at 7 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 4, 1973) at Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville, where she had been a patient less than 24 hours. She had been living at the Lane Nursing Home in Crawfordsville for two and a half years. Born Jan. 11, 1878, near Veedersburg, she was the daughter of William and Sabina Campbell Epperson. She was married Nov. 3, 1895 to David W. Carpenter, who died Sept. 2, 1967, at the age of 94. They had lived in Mellott all their married life. Mrs. Carpenter was a music teacher for 63 years, beginning at the age of 14. She once said that one of the highlights of her life was when she, her husband and son played in the Veedersburg Municipal Band at the Indianapolis Speedway three years after it was constructed. She was a member of the Mellott United Church of Christ. Survivors include a son, Donald of Mellott; a grandson, Daniel of Waynetown; a granddaughter, Mrs. Barbara Wykoff of Madison, and six grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home in Hillsboro, with the Rev. Clyde K. Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hillsboro. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Sunday.

Mellott - Florence Carpenter, 95, a former music teacher, died Thursday night in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville after suffering a stroke at 3 a.m. in Lane Nursing Home there where she had been a patient two and one-half years. Mrs. Carpenter was believed to be the oldest resident at Mellott. She and her husband had resided in the community more than 40 years. They spent the winter months in Florida. Mrs. Carpenter was a music teacher 63 years, teaching piano and instruments. She started giving lessons at the age of 14 and continued until she retired at 78. Her family played with the Veedersburg Band that performed with other bands at the Indianapolis Speedway three years after it opened. Her husband and son played with the Veedersburg Municipal Band for many years. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the United Church of Christ at Mellott. She was born Jan. 11, 1878, near Veedersburg, a daughter of William and Sabina Campbell Epperson. She married Daniel W. Carpenter of Mellott on Nov. 2, 1895. He died Sept. 2, 1967 at the age of 94. Surviving are a son, Donald of near Mellott, a grandson, Daniel of Waynetown; a granddaughter, Mrs. Barbara Wykoff of Madison and six great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Crumley-Williams Funeral Home at Hillsboro with the Rev. Clyde K. Hunter, pastor of the Mellott Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Hillsboro. Friends may call at 6-9 p.m. Sunday.
