GEORGE CANAN, son of John and Rebecca Canan and the fifth one of a family of six children, was born at Langsville, Ohio, Feb. 18 1843. Died at Sylvania, Ind., Feb. 19, 1915, age 72 years and 1 day. When quite young his parents moved to Parke Co., Ind., and settled on a farm east of Rockville. He remained there until he enlisted in the seventy-eighth Ind. Regiment, responding to the call of his country for volunteers to serve three months in putting down the Rebellion. At the expiration of this period he re-enlisted in the one hundred fifteenth Ind. Regiment for six months. He was honorably discharged at the close of both terms of service. He was united in marriage with Martha J. Williamson Aug. 14, 1869. They have walked, side by side, life’s pathway forty-six and one-half years, having lived in Parke Co., almost all of this time. Mr. Cannan has been in failing health for four years. Although suffering severely at times he has manifested much patience and cheerfulness. He was converted when a youth at the Sand Creek church and joined the United Brethren denomination. During his last sickness he expressed in words many times that he was prepared to meet the change and was anxious to be released from the pains of this mortal body.
In this frame of mind he peacefully breathed his last near noon Friday. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Evalena Lindley of Kingman, Ind., and Jennie B. Rolf of Syracuse, New York, all of whom did all that loving hands could do to relieve the suffering of one who had been a kind and devoted husband and father. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Orley Smith assisted by Albert Tomlinson in the Rush Creek church at two o’clock Sunday. Interment in the Rush Creek cemetery. – s
