Newtown - James R. Campbell, age 84, a life resident of the Newtown community and prominent in farming and banking, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday in Wesley Manor at Frankfort. He was a son of Herbert and Annabelle R. Campbell and was born here Aug. 13, 1884. He was married Jan. 2, 1909 to Martha Martin of Adams, Mass. Mr. Campbell attended Newtown schools and Wabash College and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. For five years after leaving college he was employed by the Valverta Cattle Co., with headquarters at Engle, N. M. He was associated for 15 years with Northern Indiana Power Co. and Public Service Co. of Indiana and was a pioneer in rural electrification in Fountain County. He also was instrumental in routing Ind. 55 and 341 through the community. He served many years on the Town Board. For 18 years he was president of the Newtown State Bank, since acquired by the Attica National Bank and Trust Co. Survivors include: his wife; one son, the Rev. James M. Campbell, pastor of Plymouth Church and three grandsons. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 29, at Wesley Manor, followed by graveside rites at 1 p.m. in the Newtown Cemetery. Newtown – James R. Campbell, 84, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday in the Wesley Manor Medical Center at Frankfort. A native and life resident of Newtown, Mr. Campbell was president of Newtown State Bank 18 years, was a member of the Town Board many years and had been associated with Northern Indiana Power Co 15 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and Williamsport Rotary Club and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife, the former Martha Martin, whom he married in 1909 and a son, Rev. James M. Campbell of Hammond. Mr. Campbell attended Wabash College where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. - kbz

Newtown, Ind. - James Russell Campbell, 84, died at 6:45 a.m. Monday (Jan. 27, 1969) of a heart attack in the Wesley Manor Medical Center in Frankfort. He and his wife left Newtown eight years ago to live in the Wesley Manor. Born Aug. 15, 1884 in Newtown, he was the son of Herbert and Annabelle Russell Campbell. Mr. Campbell was employed for many years in the large department store owned by his father and uncle. He was president of the Newtown State Bank for 15 years; he served on the Newtown town board for many years and was associated with the Northern Indiana Power Company for 15 years; a member of the Newtown Presbyterian Church; 50-year member of the Richland Lodge F and AM of Newtown and a member of the Attica Rotary Club. He attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. He was married to Martha Martin on Jan. 2, 1909, who survives. Also surviving are a son, the Rev. James Campbell, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Plymouth; and three grandchildren. Two daughters and a sister preceded him in death. The body is at the Goodwin Funeral Home in Frankfort. Services will be held at the Manor at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Newtown Cemetery where graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial may be in the form of contributions to the heart fund. -- kbz
