COVINGTON — Helen Cale, 100,
Covington, died at 4:23 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006 in The Waters of Covington.
She was born Feb. 8, 1906 in Danville, Ill., the daughter of Clyde and Amelia
(Jahnke) Meharry. She married Robert L. Cale Feb. 13, 1924. He preceded in
death July 17, 1972. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She raised her
family during Depression years, often supporting them through taking in washing
and ironing. In 1958, she worked for the first time outside the home as a
waitress and cook at Mike's Grill, south of Danville. She continued her work
there until the late 1970s when she retired. She became a resident of The
Waters of Covington 12 years ago and was dearly loved by the staff and
residents there. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Survivors
include: a daughter, Roberta (Bob) Cunningham, Covington; a son-in-law, Fred
Buckner, Conyers, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, including a special granddaughter,
Nancy Hughes; 33 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was
also preceded in death by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ruth (Robert)
Campbell, Bismarck, Ill., Mary (John) Anderegg, Fithian, and Margaret Buckner,
Lawrenceville, Ga.; an infant son, Billy; two grandchildren, Susan Cunningham,
Covington and Bob Anderegg, Fithian, Ill.; her parents; and a brother and
sister-in-law, Howard (Julia) Meharry, Danville. Funeral services will be at 11
a.m. today (Wednesday) in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with her son-in-law,
Bob Cunningham officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Danville,
Ill. Memorial contributions may be made to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis,
envelopes available at the funeral home. –
