George Vernon “Vern” Butler, 70, Williamsport, died in the emergency room of St. Vincent Williamsport Hospital, on Saturday, October 28, 2000 at 6:37 a.m. Death was sudden and unexpected. Born in Attica on August 29, 1930, Vernon was the son of the late Charles Burris and Oral Bell Butler. He was raised in Attica and graduated from Attica High School in 1948. He had resided in Williamsport since 1965. He formerly worked at Harrison Steel Castings Co. and Radio Material Corp. in Attica. He had been a self-employed electrician. A veteran of the U. S. Army, he served in the Korean Conflict. Vernon was baptized in the Baptist Church. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Attica and a life member of V.F.W. Post #3318, Attica. He first married Carla Taflinger on October 7, 1950 in Williamsport. On December 31, 1965, he married Shirley McMurtrie in Veedersburg. Surviving, are: three daughters, Teresa James of Attica, Becky Larson of West Lebanon and Amber (David) Johnson of Portland Arch; two sons, Steven Butler of Mellott and Larry Butler of Attica; three stepdaughters, Becky (George) Bordner of Denver, Colo., Brenda Vaughn of Lafayette and Aleta (Steve) Gibson of Naperville, Ill.; a stepson, Bill McMurtrie of Attica; a brother, Lawrence Butler of Crawfordsville; 14 grandchildren, seven step grandchildren, and 4 step great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a sister and great-grandson. Visitation was Monday at Maus Funeral Home, Attica. Military graveside service was held in V.A. National Cemetery, Danville, Ill. on Tuesday with Rev. John DeSanto officiating.
