BRIER, Samuel S.

Source: Covington People’s Friends 5 June 1847 p 2

Died in this place on the 25th ult, Samuel S. Brier, aged 27 years and a member of the legal profession.  He was afflicted by sickness for several weeks and during much of the time suffering protracted acute pain all of which he bore with his characteristic meekness and resignation.  He had been for several years an acceptable and consistent member of the Presbyterian Church (NS).  His Christian character and conduct before the world were a striking example of firm and unwavering principle, always maintain the right and discontenting the wrong.  He was a valuable member of the community where he lived and of the society to which he belonged.  With a heart enlisted in every good work, he took great delight in teaching the youth of our Sabbath school as his private papers witness his careful and studied preparations for teaching his class.  An uncomprehending of the prevailing evils of the day he was an early member of the Sons of Temperance.  To the last hours of his rationality he expressed his firm confidence in Christ and has left to his large circle of mourning friends to whom he was endeared by a thousand tender ties the soul cheering consolation that he now dwells in that goodly land that is to us afar off – and that he now sees the “King” in his beauty.  How blest the good man when he dies. Resolved that in the death of Samuel S. Brier, we have lost a worthy citizen, a kind friend and an affection companion; and that we deeply sympathize with his afflicted relative in their loss.  Resolved that we wear the usual badge of mourning for our deceased brother 10 days.  At a meeting of the Sons of Temperance, A. Henderson, SD Smith and G. Shockey were appointed a committee to prepare the above for publication.  Resolved that the above be published in the People’s Friend.
