BREWER, Philip O.

Source: Covington Republican 7 Feb 1913 p1

Death came with a particular sad blow to the home of Philip O. Brewer, living on the old Mitchell farm near Cooper’s Ford in Wabash Township, at an early hour Sunday morning, taking away Mr. Brewer, the head and only man of the family.  “Bill” as he was familiarly known to all, was a kind, big-hearted father and friend and was loved best by those who knew him most.  His death, coming almost as a stroke out of a clear sky is a great blow to his family, especially since he was the only male member of the same and the good wife is left alone on the farm to care for three girl children, two of them yet small.  PO Brewer was 59 years old and was born and raised in Wabash Township.  In the 80s he was united in  marriage to Miss Kate Mitchell and they moved on the old Mitchell farm adjoining Coal Creek at the Cooper’s Ford bridge where they have since lived, owning the farm.  He had always been termed a rugged man but some weeks ago was taken ill with kidney and heart trouble,  Dr. Spinning attending him but he was thought to be much better.  Last Saturday he hauled a load of coal from the mines, afterwards eating a hearty supper and retiring.  He awaked about midnight very ill from hearth failure and called his wife.  Dr. Spinning was at once called but before medical aid could reach him, he was dead.  The funeral services were held from the home, conducted by Rev. Higginbotham at 2 p.m. Monday interment following at Cooper’s Chapel cemetery.  He is survived by a wife, two daughters and a granddaughter, together with an aged mother and many relatives and friends. For years we have known Mr. Brewer.  He was a man of close friends, true as stel, devoted to his family and will be greatly missed by those who knew him best.  The bereaved family have the sincere sympathies of all.   –- kbz
