BOWSHER, Hillman

Hillman D. Bowsher, the son of Sylvester and Marilda Bowsher was born on a farm south of Kingman, Indiana March 17, 1874. Here he grew to young manhood and attended the public school at Kingman and also spent some time at the Friends Academy at Bloomingdale and Wabash College at Crawfordsville. After completing his education he went a few years traveling over the country going first to Georgia then Missouri and settling in Oklahoma, where he lived for several years. Again he decided to see some more of the United States, this time going to Virginia where he engaged in farming. After a few years he gave up farming and moved to Richmond where he was employed at the Cedar Works. It was also here he met Miss Inez Scott, the daughter of a Baptst minister. In the fall of 1909 they were united in marriage. To this union were born three children, Nellie, Hillman Deal and Charles. For the past 7 years he was in failing health and three of these were spent at Madeira, Ohio with a nephew, Dr. A.G. Madden, Jr. assisting with the work as much as his failing strength would permit and for the remaining four years he lived with his sister, Mrs. Clare Madden. In spite of medical skill and careful nursing, April 9, 1947, he closed his eyes to all earthly cares. "Hilly" was of a reserved disposition and of such a retiring nature to be almost a fault. He had no desire to mingle with crowds. He was not one to sit idle, and seemed to be moved by an inner compulsion to work, which he had not the strength to do, driving himself far beyond his physical capacity, of endurance. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife, one daughter, two sons, two brothers, a sister and a host of other relatives and many friends. He was laid to rest in the Madden plot in the Fraternal Cemetery.
