Mrs. E. N. Bowman died at her residence in this city last Monday after a long and painful illness from cancer. Mrs. Bowman was the widow of Elliott [N.] Bowman, who served as 4th Auditor of the Treasury under Cleveland. She was a native of the county and had lived here all of her life. She had not enjoyed good health for years and her death was a happy relief from the terrible suffering she had been compelled to bear. She leaves 3 children: Mrs. George Meitzler, of Salmon City Idaho; Mrs. Duke Weldon of Terre Haute and Mrs. Clarence Case of Attica and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. Services were conducted in the ME Church Wed afternoon at 2:30 o'clock after which the remains were followed to their final resting place by a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends.
Harriet A. Bowman Birth: Jun. 17, 1838 Death: Feb. 11, 1901 Harriett's obituary read: "Death's Hand Removes From the Community An Excellent Woman - Monday evening, February 11, at -o'clock Mrs. Harriet Bowman, wife of the late Hon. Elliott N. Bowman, died at her home in this city on Washington Street. She had been ill since her husbands sudden death, Monday, May 21, 1900 [sic, May 6, 1900], and confined to her bed with no hopes of her recovery. Her affliction was cancer on the breast, and it slowly but surely ate away until the vital chord was touched. During the past week she sank slowly and the family realized that it was only a question of a short time until death would relieve her suffering. The funeral occurred Wednesday at 2 o'clock from the residence, the Rev. Baker, pastor of the Fifth Street Christian church delivered the discourse. Interment body place in Prescott Grove cemetery, beside the body of her husband who was buried last May. Harriet A. Spinning, daughter of Wm. F. and Eve Spinning, was born in Dayton, Ohio, June 17, 1838. Came with her parents to Covington, Indiana when about seven years old. Has resided in Fountain County all her life except three years in Iowa and four years in Washington, D.C. United with the Disciples of Christ at Wallace, Indiana, March 1856, at the age of 17; was married to Morris Jarvis in 1858. This union was broken in December 1863, by the death of the husband while serving his country. Married to E. N. Bowman May 23, 1866. Three daughters survive her, Nevada Weldon, Mrs. Uma Meitzler and Mrs. Minnie Case, Charley and Emma having preceded her to the spirit land. In the death of Mrs. Bowman the family loses a loving and affectionate mother, and the community a most excellent woman. She lived the life of Christian motherhood, being attached to her home and family and no one can fully realize the great loss to the family upon whom her entire love and affections were centered. Her three daughters, Mrs. George Meitzler of Salmon City, Idaho, Mrs. Weldon of Terre Haute and Mrs. Cast has been constantly by her side since her first illness and all that human aid could accomplish was done to alleviate her suffering. She passed away firm in the hope that in a happier sphere she would again meet those gone before, and the loved ones before by inexorable decree of death. The family have the sympathy of all in their great loss, who join in hoping that the dark night of death may breath a dawn bright in the reunion of all earthly lore, resplendent in the breaking of God's endless glory. Out of the sobs and tears and pain of earthly sorrow may come a recampened of eternal life with eternal love." Burial: Prescott Grove Cemetery Covington Fountain County Indiana, USA Record added:
