Bowles, 92, of Newtown, died in St. Clare Medical Center, Crawfordsville, on
Monday, February 19, 2001 at 2 a.m. She had been a patient since Wednesday.
Born in Veedersburg on February 12, 1909, she was the daughter of Charles
Cornell and Jennie Lou (Walden) Diehl. She lived most of her life in Newtown,
where she attended the Newtown school. Martha served as assistant postmistress
at Newtown Post Office, retiring on January 30, 1983, after 25 years of
service. She also owned and operated an antique store in Newtown for several
years. She married Woodford “Woody” Bowles on June 19, 1926 in West Lafayette.
He preceded her in death on June 23, 1984. Surviving, are: three sons, Charles
Ben Bowles and Robert “Bob” Bowles, both of Attica, and Carl J. Bowles of
Newtown; a sister, Hazel Stout of Newtown; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a
grandson, Lance Bowles, and a brother, Frank Diehl. Visitation was Wednesday at
Maus Funeral Home, Attica. Service at Newtown Community Church on Thursday at
11 a.m. with Rev. Phil Crubaugh officiating. Interment in Newtown Cemetery.
