The Thanksgiving holiday at Covington has been marred by tragedy for the second year in a row as a result of a fatal accident Thursday night. Three area residents died when the car in which they were riding plunged over an embankment into the backwaters of the Wabash. Dead are James J (Jimmie Jack) Bodine, 29 of Covington, Paul Junior (Skip) Oilar, 24 and his wife, Toni Jene Oilar, 30 both of Veedersburg. The accident at 12:10 Thursday night on US 136 just west of the river bridge in Warren County. The car, which Bodine was driving was westbound when it suddenly skidded, veered sharply across the eastbound land and plummeted through a guard rail down a steep embankment coming to rest on its top in the backwater. State police listed no reason for the skid. The car was completely submerged. Bodine & Mrs. Oiler were thrown from the car. Bodine died instantly of a broken neck. The Oiler’s deaths were attributed to drowning. A year ago three Illinois residents plunged to their deaths over the Wabash Bridge at I-74 into the icy waters as they were on a holiday trip. This incident occurred the day before Thanksgiving. Investigating the accident were four state troopers, the Covington Rescue Squad, Covington Police Departments, Warren County Deputy Coroner Richard Stump, Fountain Coroner Robert Shelby and the Warren county Sheriff’s Department. – kbz – thanks Bren M
