Miss Leolia Black, 93, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville where she was admitted Saturday. She had been in failing health since August.  She was born in Newtown and had lived her entire life in the house in which she was born until moving to Crawfordsville in August. There she made her home with a niece and nephew, William Black and Miss Geraldine Black. She attended Newtown school and graduated from Madame Blacker’s (Blaker?) school for teachers at Indianapolis. She began her teaching career at age 16, retiring at the age of 71. Although most of her teaching was in Newtown schools, her last five years she taught at Mounet School at Rensselaer. Miss Black also taught piano.  She was a member of Newtown Hopewell Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years and was organist there 36 years. She also was a member of Fountain County Historical Society. There are no immediate survivors. – kbz

The body will lie in state in Church one hour prior to service at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Newtown Baptist Church, Rev. George Phelps officiating; interment Newtown Cemetery. Nieces and nephews survive. Miss Black was a charter member of Newtown LaChorale.-kbz

Newtown – Miss Leolia Black, age 93, a teacher in Newtown and Rensselaer for 56 years, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday Oct 8 in Culver Hospital, Crawfordsville, after an illness of two months. Miss Black, a daughter of one of Newtown’s pioneer families, started teaching when she was 16. She retired at the age of 71. She attended Newtown School and was graduated from Madame Blaker’s School for Teacher in Indianapolis. She taught mainly in Newtown with the exception of her last five years which were at Mounette School in Rensselaer.  Miss Black also was a piano teacher. She was active in the Newtown Hopewell Baptist Church.  She was a former Sunday School superintendent and Sunday School teacher and was the church organist for 36 years.  Miss Black was a charter member of the Newtown LaChorale and member of the Fountain County Historical Society. She lived most of her life in the home in which she was born on Nov 29, 1873. She was the last of 14 children born to Aaron and Elizabeth (Graham) Black. The only survivors are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. today, Oct 11 at the Newtown Baptist Church. The Rev. George Phelps officiated. Burial with the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home in charge was in the Newtown Cemetery. – kbz
