VEEDERSBURG -- Elza W. Black, 81, Veedersburg salesman, died early Thursday morning at Lakeview Hospital in Danville, Ill. He had been in failing health for a lengthy period and hospitalized for over a month. Black had remained active despite his advanced age. Until ill health forced his retirement a few months ago, he was employed by the Farm Bureau at Veedersburg as a salesman and by the Smith Plumbing Co., in a clerical capacity. Prior to his arrival in Veedersburg 22 years ago, he owned and operated grocery and hardware establishments in Indianapolis. He was a member of the Veedersburg Methodist Church and of the Veedersburg Masonic Lodge. A son of Albert and Mary Melton Black, he was born Aug. 1, 1886, in Newton, Ill. He was reared and educated in Newton. He was married on Aug. 3, 1909, to Lena Maude Katrow in Charleston, Ill. Surviving are the wife; a daughter, Mrs. Lena Reid of Indianapolis; three brothers, Frank of Terre Haute, Wayne of Burbank, Calif., and Harry Of Monroe, La.; three sisters, Mrs. Lula Kinser of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Ruth Patterson and Carrie Clickner, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Parham Funeral Home in Veedersburg with Rev. Mrs. Edith Bruner officiating. Friends may call after 7 p.m. Friday. T'he body will then be taken to Season-Good Funeral Home in Newton, Ill. for services there. Burial will be in the Brick Cemetery at Newton.
