G. Donn Bishop, 78 of Lakeshore Dr, Brownstown died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday March 2, at his home. He had been ill one month. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Seymour, a US Army veteran, serving from 1942-45 and was a real estate owner-broker with Century 21, Donn Bishop Real Estate in both Seymour and Scottsburg. He was a member of the national Board of Realtors, Jackson Co Board of Realtors (past president); Seymour Chamber of Commerce, First United Methodist Church where he was a longtime Sunday School teacher, Indiana University Alumni Association, Seymour Elks Lodge and Shadowood Golf Course. He was past president of Seymour Rotary and in 1999 was honored as Seymour’s Citizen of the Year at the Chamber annual dinner.
Following his discharge from the army in 1945, he returned to Indiana University where he received his master degree in business administration. He was a member of the Board of Aeons and Blue Key Honorary while at Indiana. He has been a Jackson County resident since 1952 when he owned the B&W Shoe store. During the 1960s he was VP of Herff Jones in Indianapolis. In 1972, he became a realtor in Seymour and since 1976, he has owned Century 21 Donn Bishop Real Estate. His office has received many national awards over the past 27 years.
He was born May 3, 1923, at Mellott. A son of George and Lena Smith Bishop and moved to Jackson County in 1952. He married the former Nancy S. Hemmer July 11, 1975 at Seymour and she survives. Also surviving are five children Terry (Mark) Davidson of Seymour, Becki (Gene) Thompson of Cortland, Scott Bishop of Pensacola, Fla; Julia Hemmer (Dennis) Rhyne of Indianapolis and Tom Hemmer of Seymour. And 8 grandchildren: Nate and Ann Tormoehlen of Richmond, Va; Trent Tormoehlen of Seymour; Clint Davidson of Columbus, Ohio; Libby Davidson of Charlestown SC; Alison Thompson; Matthew Thompson and Ellen Thompson all of Cortland and Sarah Rhyne of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by both parents and a sister, Mildred Bishop Mahan. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wed March 8 at Voss & Sons Funeral Service in Seymour with Rev. Neal Partain officiating. - kbz

Crawfordsville, Ind April 12 – Mr. and Mrs. George L. Bishop of Mellott northwest of here were notified yesterday by the War Department that this son, Private First Class Donn G. Bishop has been missing in Italy since Feb 23. Private Bishop entered service March 4, 1943 and was sent overseas in September of that year. His first assignment was in North Africa but since November he had served with the Fifth Army in Italy. He is a graduate of Mellott HS and a former student at Indiana University.

Mellott, Aug 17 – Pfc G. Donn Bishop, prisoner of war in Germany broadcase over the radio Aug 10 according to word received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Bishop. The Bishops received a telegram from the provost general at Washington DC stating that their son had broadcast a message to his folks, saying he was all right. The Bishops have also received about 85 cards and letters from over the US from persons who heard the broadcast.

Mellott, June 15 – Pfc G. Donn Bishop, reported missing Feb 23 after a battle in Italy is a prisoner of war in Germany according to a message received Thursday by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. George Bishop. A card written by Pfc Bishop and sent to his parents through the Red Cross informed them that he was well and was being transferred to another prison camp in Germany.
