Pine Village — Mrs. Elizabeth Viola (Betty) Bernarte, 38, of Rt. 1, Pine Village, was found dead in her residence Monday afternoon by her children when they returned home from school. She had been in ill health since January but death was unexpected. A native of Attica, she was born April 7, 1930. She lived in and around Attica all her life. The past six years she resided in Pine Village. Her marriage July 17, 1949, in Cates, was to Frank Bernarte. He is a construction worker. She had been employed three years at Essex Wire Co. in Lafayette prior to her illness. Before that she was employed at RMC. She was a member of the Stone Bluff United Methodist Church, previously the EUB Church. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Frank William and Carl Walter, both at home; three daughters, Mrs. Rosemary Bixlar, Cheryl Elaine and Shirley Ann, all at home; a brother, Walter Totheroh Jr. of Wingate; two sisters, Mrs. Wanda Young of Veedersburg and Mrs. Carolyn Keller of Mellott; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Totheroh Sr. of Stone Bluff; and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Viola Hutchison of Mellott. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at DeSutter Funeral Home. Final rites are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stone Bluff United Methodist Church with Rev. Earl Carmichael officiating. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Attica.
