  West Lebanon—Earl E. Berkshire, 88, West Lebanon, died at 3:34 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1989 in Hendricks Community Hospital, Danville, Ind.

  He was born Nov. 12, 1900 in Marshfield, the son of Edward and Arla Sales Berkshire. He lived in Marshfield until 1945 when he moved to West Lebanon. In 1925 he married Edith M. Lane, who preceded him in death in 1934. His second marriage was June 4, 1942 in Rockville to Juanita I. Calhoun, who survives.

  He worked in a grocery store at the age of 13 for Ed Wurtsbaugh, then started his own store in 1922. He owned a grocery in Marshfield from 1922 to 1945 and in West Lebanon from 1945 to 1955. In 1958, he opened the Sweet Shop in West Lebanon and operated that until 1981 when he retired.

  He was a member of west Lebanon Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed writing letters and wrote hundreds each year to friends and acquaintances.

  Surviving besides his wife are a son, J. Harold, Anderson; two stepdaughters, Marge Purins, Santa Ana, Calif., and Rita M. Vance, Fort Campbell, Ky.; one stepson, Ronald E. Calhoun, Stone Mountain, Ga.; a sister, Lola Seals, Rossville, Ill.; a granddaughter, Gina Berkshire, Muncie; 13 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by two sisters.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today (Friday) at Fisher Funeral Home, West Lebanon, with the Revs. Steve Pearce and Jim Kesler officiating. Burial will be in West Lebanon Cemetery. – thanks to s
