A 22-year-old Attica man was killed Saturday, July 18, when his truck left the road and plowed into a cluster of trees near Riverside, Indiana. Douglas Berghoff, RR 2, Attica, was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple traumas by Fountain County Coroner Robert Maus.
Investigators said Berghoff was driving on a blacktop road half a miles east of Riverside and apparently fell asleep. Skid marks indicated that the victim failed to negotiate a curve, went about 30 feet off the road and struck the cluster of trees. The truck turned on its side and Berghoff was thrown about 15 feet into a ravine.
Born August 17, 1958, in Lafayette, Berghoff was the son of Donald L. and Betty Kirts Berghoff. He had lived in Attica most of his life and graduated from Attica High School. He had worked at Duncan Electric in Lafayette for five years. Survivors include his mother; a brother, David of Lafayette; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Berghoff of Brookston. He was preceded in death by his father. Services were conducted Monday at Solar-Baker Lafayette Chapel. Rev. Dean R. Graybill officiated and burial was in Rest Haven Cemetery. – thanks to S
