Allen Bass, 23, Veedersburg community youth was killed almost instantly in a tragic accident about 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning in a car-truck crash about 3 miles west of Crawfordsville. Joe James, also of Veedersburg was critically hurt in the accident and is at the Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville. Allen Bass died en route to the hospital. The accident occurred at the Black Creek bridge when the Bass car and a gasoline tank truck apparently sideswiped. The driver of the truck, a Mr. Fine was also said to be injured but no details could be learned at press time. The 1950 Oldsmobile auto driven by Bass was completely demolished. The two Veedersburg men were en route to work at the Mid-States plant in Crawfordsville. Allen Bass was a graduate of the Veedersburg HS and was married to Martha LaBaw. They made their home in Stone Bluff and have one child, Ronnie Lee. Allen served two years overseas with the US Army following his graduation in 1950. He was a member of the Veedersburg EUB Church. He was born in Veedersburg and is survived by the wife and son, the father, Jesse Bass, four brothers, Sherman, Floyd, Chester and Bill; three sisters, Mrs. Juanita Griffin, Mrs. Marie Underwood and Mrs. Martha Thomas all of the Veedersburg community. He was preceded in death by his mother and a sister. Joe James is the son of Mrs. Dora James of Veedersburg. The body of Allen Bass was returned to the Fishero Funeral Home on Thursday where funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time. Kbz

Crawfordsville - A Veedersburg man was fatally injured and a companion hurt Thursday morning in a spectacular collision of an automobile and gasoline truck on a bridge three miles west of here on Road 136. Allen Bass, 26, driver of the car died en route to Culver Hospital here. His companion, Joe James, 50 of Veedersburg suffered chest injuries and was hospitalized. Driver of the gasoline truck, Lester J. Fine of Crawfordsville scrambled to safety from the cab of his truck before the 7,200 gallons of fuel exploded into a column of flame visible for several miles. Blazing gasoline rolled off the bridge over Black Creek and sent a sheet of flame roaring a quarter mile downstream firing trees. Long distance telephone lines from Crawfordsville to Terre Haute, Danville and Veedersburg were burned, cutting off communications. Bass and James were enroute to work at the Mid-State Steel Company here. A Montgomery county deputy sheriff, Clarence Demoret said James told him Bass fell asleep at the wheel of the automobile and sideswiped the truck. Bass was born at Chrisman, Ill and moved to Veedersburg 12 years ago. A graduate of Veedersburg high school, he served overseas in the Army. He was married to Martha LaBaw. Surviving besides his widow are a son, Ronny Lee, two years old; his father, Jesse Bass of Veedersburg; three sisters, Mrs. Marie Underwood, Mrs. Martha Thomas and Mrs. Juanita Griffin all of Veedersburg; four brothers, Floyd Bass in the Air Force at Sacramento, Calif; Chester Bass in the Air Force in French Morocco, Sherman and Jesse Jr both of Veedersburg. - kbz
