Death traveled the highways of Fountain and adjoining Warren County over the weekend and a busload of 45 passengers narrowly escaped fatal or serious injury when the driver was stricken on US Highway 136 east of Waynetown in a weekend accident.  Franklin Elwood Barfell, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barfell of Attica was fatally hurt about 1 a.m. Sunday when a car filled with six teenage boys went out of control near the Mitchell Drive-In restaurant formerly the Airport Inn, three miles south of Attica on US Highway 41 and went into the ditch. Robert Wilkinson, 18 of Attica the driver was only slightly hurt. Charles Crowder, 17, Attica was injured and was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. Others in the car were Thomas Swaney, 19, Williamsport and Harold Burris, 14 and Lawrence Phillips, 18 both of Attica who were only bruised and scratched.

Attica - Franklin Elwood Barfell, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barfell, was fatally injured in a car crash three miles south of here on US 41 at 1 a.m. Sunday.  

The death car was drive by another teenager, Robert Wilkinson, 18 of here.  He was only slightly injured.  Others in the car were Charles Crowder, 17 of Attica; Thomas Swaney, 19 of Williamsport; Harold Burris, 14 and Lawrence Phillips, 18 both of Attica.

It was reported the car left the road out of control and crashed in the ditch. No other car was involved.

Young Crowder's condition at St. Elizabeth hospital, Lafayette was described Monday as fair. Others in the crash were injured only slight and required no treatment except for scratches and bruishes.  

Survivors include the parents, four brothers, Darwin and Ed both of here; Don of Dearborn, Mich and Robert with the armed forces in Germany; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wilkinson of Reynolds, Joan and Jean both at home.
