Seriously injured early Thursday morning when a steel cable became accidently wrapped around his leg as he was driving a tractor, Harold (Mike) Bales, 37, Covington farmer died Saturday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville where he had been in a serious condition since the accident. Bales was driving the tractor near the Bert Hughes home when one wheel dropped into a hole in the pavement. The cable which was on the floor of the machine jolted loose and one end became entwined around a lug of the tractor wheel and Bales’ leg was caught in the coil as it tightened. He was taken to the hospital where later amputation was necessary. His wife is a nurse at St. Elizabeth. Bales was a resident of Dane in his youth and served as postmaster following the death of his father who had held the office. He graduated from the high school in 1923 and attended the University of Wisconsin. Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. Margaret Rearden Bales, now of Terre Haute; two brothers, Robert of Terre Haute and Caleb of Fort Branch, Ind and his wife, June Bales.
