VEEDERSBURG — Vernon Ray Babb,
81, Veedersburg, died at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, July 9, 2006 in Woodland Manor
Nursing Center, Attica, where he had been a resident for the past nine months.
He was born June 21, 1925 in Momence, Ill., the son of Vernon Ranshaw Babb II
and Lizzie (Stephens) Babb. He married Melissa M. Ingalsbe May 8, 1948 in Covington.
She survives. He moved to Mellott as a baby and graduated from Richland
Township School in 1943. Following graduation he entered the U. S. Navy and saw
action as a tail gunner in a B-24 Bomber during World War II. At the time of
his discharge, he received the rank of Seaman Second Class After his discharge
from the service he took flying lessons from the airport south of Attica. In
1948 he received his pilot license for single engine airplanes. He dearly loved
planes and flying. He worked at ALCOA in Lafayette for eight years. He farmed
most of his life in Richland and VanBuren Townships. He was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Covington. He enjoyed woodworking. His life was lived
for his Lord and his family. His greatest gift to his children was a Christian
heritage. Survivors, besides the wife, include: a son, Vernon (Verlinda) Babb
III, Veedersburg; three daughters, Rosemary Moore, Clinton, Ann (Bruce)
Donovan, Veedersburg, and Dixie (Randy) Salts, Wingate; a special nephew who
was raised with Vernon, Russell Wayne “Jack" (Maurlea) Babb, Wheaton,
Ill.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by
his parents; a daughter, Dianne Ruth Makemson; and three sisters, Mary, Martha
and infant Naomi Violet. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday)
in Maus Funeral Home, Hillsboro, with Pastor Troy Harkey officiating. Burial
with military services will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Serenity Hospice or the Alzheimer's
Foundation. – jlr
