COVINGTON — Artificial respiration and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation failed to revive Harold Wayne Auter, 37, of Downers Grove, Ill., a native of Fountain County and former resident of Covington, Sunday morning off the beach at St. Augustine, Fla. He was pronounced dead as a result of drowning. The drowning victim and his family had just arrived in St. Augustine for a vacation the day before. Auter and his family were swimming Sunday morning when he was caught by a big wave and pulled under by the undertow. His 17-year-old son Mike, swimming close by, saw his father was in difficulty and tried to reach him. He called for help with immediate response, but efforts to revive Auter were futile. Harold Wayne Auter was born Dec. 29, 1930, in Fountain County, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ingold Auter. He was married to the former Edna Mae Brann, Covington, who survives. He was employed at Burrin's Pharmacy in Covington for many years. He left Covington and went to Gibson City, Ill., where he was employed in a pharmacy. The family then moved to Watseka where he was employed in a drugstore eight years, and also worked at the clinic there. Recently, the family moved to Downers Grove. Surviving in addition to his wife are one son, Mike; a daughter, Karen; a brother, I. J. Auter, Veedersburg; and four sisters, Mrs. Fern (Margaret Cooper) ands Mrs. Don (Vivian) Claypool, both of Mellott; Mrs. Robert (Sue) Smith of Byron, Ill., and Mrs. Wayne (Jean) Warrick, Covington. The body was taken to the DeValk Funeral Home in Watseka where friends may call this evening, June 26. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Graveside rites will be conducted at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Covington at 4 p.m.
WATSEKA (CNS)--Harold W. Auter, 37, of Downers Grove and formerly of Watseka, apparently drowned at 9 a.m. Sunday, at St. Augustine, Fla., where the family was vacationing. Mr. Auter had moved to Downers Grove a month ago from Watseka. At Watseka he was employed by the Fay Drug Company for six years, the last two he was a photographer and reporter for the Iroquois County Daily Times. He also had been a druggist at Covington, Ind. Born Dec. 29, 1930 at Covington, Ind., he was the son of Ingold and Blanche Riffle Auter. He was married at Covington on Nov. 11, 1949 to Edna M. Brann who survives. Also surviving are two children; Michael, Karen, both at home, four sisters, Mrs. Fern (Margaret) Cooper, Mrs. Don (Vivian) Claypool, both of Mellott, Ind., Mrs. Wayne (Jean) Warrick, Covington, Ind., Mrs. Robert Sue Smith, Byron, Ill., and a brother, Ira J. of Veedersburg, Ind. He was preceded in death by the parents and a daughter. The body will be returned to the DeValk Funeral Home in Watseka. Friends will be received after 2 p.m. Wednesday. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with The Rev. William H. Laughlin officiating. Graveside services and burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery at Covington, at 4 p.m.
