COVINGTON — Edgar Ingold (Bunch) Auter, 77, born Feb. 2, 1890, in Shawnee Township, Fountain County, was found dead at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in the garage under the amphitheater at the Covington City Park. He was caretaker for the park and lived on the premises in the caretaker’s house. He was found by his cousin, Mrs. Eula Auter, who had been keeping house for him since the death of his wife, earlier this year. Mrs. Auter told Fountain County Coroner Robert Shelby that he had gone out about 8:30 that morning. About 10 a.m. she noticed the garage door ajar, thought he was working on the car, went out to look for him and found him dead. He was a life resident of Fountain County and had lived in the Covington area since 1933. He had farmed until 1947 and was employed at the elevator, the Covington Grain Company. He had been caretaker at the park the last four years. He was a member of the Congregational Christian Church at Mellott. In 1911, he married Mable Branch Riffle, who died Feb. 3, 1967. He is survived by six children, Mrs. Fern (Margaret) Cooper, Mrs. Don (Vivian) Claypool, both of Mellott; I. J. Auter, Veedersburg; Mrs. Wayne (Jean) Warrick, Covington; Harold Wayne Auter, Watseka, Ill.; Mrs. Robert (Sue) Smith, Byron, Ill. Eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter also survive. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home. The Rev. Glenn Ray officiated and burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery here.

COVINGTON—Ingold "Butch" Auter, 77, a resident here since 1933, died about 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Coroner Robert Shelby said he took his own life by hanging, the body being found in a tool shed under the grandstand at the city park. A native of Shawnee Township, he was born Feb. 7, 1890, to Julian and Eva Auter. He was married Sept. 27, 1911, to Mabel Blanche Riffle. She died Feb. 3, 1967. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. (Margaret) Fern Cooper and Mrs. (Vivian) Don Claypool of Mellott, Mrs. Jean Warrick of Covington and Mrs. Sue Smith of Byron, Ill.; two sons, I. J. Auter of Veedersburg and Harold Wayne Auter of Watseka, Ill., eight grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Mr. Auter was a member of the United Church of Christ at Mellott. He farmed until 1945, after which for several years he was employed at the Covington grain elevator and for the last four years was caretaker of the city park here. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home, with Rev. Glenn Ray officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
