Susan Ayles Applegate was born in Ohio March the 5th 1826. She departed this life at her home in Sterling, Monday Sept 16, aged 81 Years 6 months 11 days. Her parents moved to this county when Susan was but a small child and in her father's family were 10 girls and one boy. Of these only two now remain, Mrs. Emily Crook of Attica and Mr. Payton Ayles of Uma ? Wash. At the age of 12 Susan united with the OP Church, she was the last saved one of the charter members of that body of believers. Mrs. Prudence Minick, being now the only one remainin g of that band of 14 who 69 years ago pledged themselves to faithful service. Mother Applegate in after years united with the Cold SPring Church now Veedersburg Christian Church. On the 1st day in Feb 1846 she was united in marriage to Harvey Applegate. They first resided in Chambersburg where her husband was in the wagon making business. After some 8 years they moved to the old Applegate homestead some 3 miles north east of Veedersburg. In 1883 her husband died and in 1871 all their children having married except her youngest son Samuel she moved to Sterling where they resided at the time of her death. Of her own family there were seven children, four daughters and three sons. The eldest daughter was married to William McKnight both are now dead but two daughters, Maggie and Ollie remain. The second daughter Martha married ? Marksbury, the third Emily married WH Wright of Hillsboro, the fourth Malinda was married to VJ Wright of Newtown. Her eldest son, Aaron is now a resident of Yeddo, a farmer and is well known throughout the county. Her second son James is now dead but left a wife and two children one of which Mrs. Thad McKnight with her two little ones was at the funeral. Her youngest son Samuel remains single and has been faithful in caring for mother until the day of her death. There are now living 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. The family desire to express publicly there sincere thanks to those friends who helped to care for mother in the days of her sickness and to those who aided in the service in song and in any way.
