Wilbert Manley Allen, 92, Attica native and philanthropist, died Wednesday April 8, 1970 in Peterson Place for Convalescent, Wheeling ,W Va. He formerly resided at Aiken Ridge St, Clairsville, Ohio. Mr. Allen founded the Sterling Remedy Co in Attica prior to moving to Wheeling in 1909. He also started several other drug companies in various states. He was past director of Attica Central National Bank & Trust, past president of Belmont Hills Country Club and past member of Wheeling Elks Lodge 29. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville and Ft. Henry Club in Wheeling. Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Betty Hall of California. The body will be returned to Attica.

Attica – Philanthropist and humanitarian Wilbert M. Allen, 92 an Attica native died 5:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Peterson Place Convalescent Home in Wheeling, W VA. He had broken a hip in a fall several weeks ago and was making an apparent recovery from surgery at the time of his death. Mr. Allen was born in Attica on Dec 19, 1877 the son of David Sand and Julia Poole Allen. Following his graduation from Attica HS he became associated with the Sterling Remedy Co, the originally. Allen joined the purchaser of the drug company and moved to Wheeling, W VA. He served the industry until 1928 when he was offered the post of branch manager in London, England which he declined. He was instrumental in forming the California Fig Co, the JG Dodson Co, the Milton Knowton Danderine Co and the JW James Co all subsidiaries of the Sterling Products Co. Throughout his life he retained his interest in Attica. He was a substantial stockholder in Central National Park and Trust sout of Attica. Several years ago he built and donated to the City of Attica the cemetery entrance at Riverside Cemetery which gift he dedicated to his mother. Along with his close friend, William F. Kennedy, Mr. Allen lived on a 57-acre estate at St. Clairsville Ohio near Wheeling. Mr. Allen contributed a large swimming pool to the city of St. Clairsville and for many years was president of the Belmont Hills Country Club serving the area of Wheeling. He was an honor member of the Wheeling Elks Lodge No 29, the Ft. Henry Club of downtown Wheeling and a member of the Presbyterian Church in both St. Clairsville and Attica. Throughout his life he was instrumental in the building of many public projects he was interested in. His only survivors are a sister, Mrs. Betty Ball of Los Angeles, Calif and a great nephew, Thomas Allen Broadie in Minnesota. Funeral services will be held at the Kepner Mortuary Friday. Friends may call from 8-10 p.m. Friday at the Reemer Funeral Chapel with entombment and final rites 10 a.m. Saturday at the family mausoleum in Riverside Cemetery. – kbz

Funeral services for Wilbert M. Allen were held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the family mausoleum in Riverside Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were Wade Harrison and Raymond DeSutter. Pallbearers were Lee Whitehall, Russell Blickenstaff, Virgil Johnson, LC Roemer and Mark Kennedy.
