ALLEN, Ruby - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Danville, Ill - Miss Ruby Allen, a young girl who came here a week ago from Kingman, Ind died at 11:35 o'clock Friday night at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. She was taken ill Tuesday in a hotel on Walnut Street conducted by Carpenter Williams. About 10 o'clock the same morning she was removed on the orders of the physician who had been called to attend her to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. The Pape ambulance made the call. An abscess on the brain for which no relief could be afforded was the assigned cause of her death. According to the mother, Miss Allen was engaged to a soldier, Pvt Gordon Jackson, formerly of Kingman Ind, now with Co. I of the 151st US Infantry now at Hattiesburg. Miss Allen was the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Allen, a cook employed in a local restaurant and was born in Cates, Fountain County, Ind Oct 15, 1901 (note: papemortuary.com has Oct 15, 1902). She had been making her home for the past few years with a grandmother at Kingman, Ind. Just a week before she was taken ill, she came to this city to make her home with her mother. Ruby was the third child. The father is still living and is a blacksmith, but he and Mrs. Allen have been parted for years. The following brothers and sisters survive: Raymond Allen now at Jacksonville, Fla; Mrs. Cordia Baxter, wife of Ray Baxter, 23 South Hazel Street and Walter All, the youngest of the children, age 13.

=== Same source as above The community here was shocked and surprised to hear of the death of Miss Ruby Allen. Miss allen went to Danville about two weeks ago to visit her mother, who lives in that city. On last Friday she toook violently ill and was rushed to the hospital but medical science could do nothing for her and she died at 11:30 pm. Friday. The cause of her death was an abscess on the brain. Miss Allen was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Austil of this place and made her home with her grandmother, Mrs. Austil. Ruby was 16 passed and was a beautiful girl well loved by all her acquaintances. She was a happy jolly girl and seemed to be in perfect health and no one thought of hearing of her death at this time. She was buried at Danville Tuesday and quite a number went from here to attend the last rites that were observed for this young life that left us so suddenly. - typed by kbz
