George & Rosa Allen Instantly Killed By Train

The worst tragedy that has occurred in this vicinity in many months was revealed this morning when two persons met instant death at the Barker crossing, E. of Cates. The dead are: George Allen, age 73. Rosa Allen, age 71. Mr. and Mrs. Allen who were residents of Cates went to their death when their machine, a Ford touring car was demolished by the W. bound Clover Leaf passenger at 9:45 o'clock. The aged couple were coming from their son's home when the fatal accident took place. The Barker crossing which is one and one half miles E. of Cates is obstructed on the left by a large hill. It is believed that neither Mr. Allen or his wife saw the approaching train. The car was struck squarely by the engine and carried on the pilot for fully 100- yards where it was smashed and turned over in the ditch. The occupants apprently met death instantly as their bodies were broken and crushed when picked up by members of the train crew. Mr. and Mrs. Allen are survived by 6 children: John, Harry and William Allen and Mrs. Margaret Renick, Mrs. Dora Barker and Mrs. Grace Clem, the latter residing at Danville. The bodies of the unfortunate victims were taken to the family home in Cates shortly after the accident.
