William D. "Red" Alexander. 67, of Fairmount died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (Sept 7, 1978) at Lakeview Medical Center. He was transferred from St. Elizabeth Hospital on Aug. 31. He had been ill since July 18. He had been employed by Salladay Construction Co. since 1955. He was a member of the Fairmount United Presbyterian Church, where he also was a trustee and past Sunday School Teacher. He was a manager of Order of Arrow in scouting and a manager of girl and boy ball teams in Fairmount. Alexander also was a member of Farm Bureau softball and the Vermillion County Red Cross. He was a past member of the Fairmount Lions Club and past 4-H Leader. He was a president of the Ball Association of Fairmount and a member of the Fairmount Volunteer Fire Department. Alexander was born July 4, 1911, at Latham, Ill, he was the son of William and Lola McBee Alexander. On March 2, 1931, he married Inez Fern McNees in Covington, Ind., she survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. James O. (Betty) Salladay of Fairmount; four sons, William R. of Fairmount, James E. of Fairmount and Staff Sgt. Clifford R. of Gunter Air Force Base in Mongomery, Ala. Also surviving are two sisters, Ruth Gillaspie of Decatur and Martha Wright of Danville; one brother , Grover of Home Gardens, Danville; 16 Grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a sister and a grandson. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Fairmount United Presbyterian Church. Miss Margaret Crowl will officiate, and burial will be in Greenview Cemetery in Fairmont. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the services. Visitation will be Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Carrington Funeral Home in Fairmount.
