Covington, Ind. -- Carmen D. Abernathy, 81, of Greenville, Mich., formerly of Covington, passed away late Thursday evening, Feb. 27 2003, at the home of her daughter. Born on April 21 1921, in Gessie, she was the only child of Everett & Ruby (Fox) Hines. After graduating high school and attending one year of college, she married Wayne L. Abernathy. He preceded her in death in 1957. She then returned to school, earning her bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and her master's degree from Indiana State University. For 28 years, Mrs. Abernathy taught art and music at Covington Elementary School, as well as adult education in the evenings. She was a life long member of the First Baptist church at Covington. Surviving are a daughter, Waynette Brandt of Greenville, Mich., a grandson Carter Brandt, at home; long time special friends Julie (Thome) and Tom Bolyard and their children, Chelsea, Jordan and Katrina, all of Indianapolis and several cousins. In honoring Carmen's wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services have been held. Burial will be in the Lower Mound Cemetery in Covington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Covington Community Foundation, PO Box 175, Covington, Ind. The Brown-Ternan & Christiansen Funeral home of Greenville, Mich. is serving the family and is entrusted with the arrangements.
