Jean Abernathy, 75, a lifelong resident of rural Veedersburg, died at 1:30 a.m. Friday Nov 23, 2001 at her residence. She was born Sept 2 1926 in Covington the daughter of Wesley and Irene Shoemake Maines. She married David E. Abernathy Nov 11 1944 in Covington by Hazel Hatton. He survives. She worked all her life as a maid for many residents of Covington and the surrounding area. She enjoyed rummage sales, flea markets, antiquing, riding her 4 wheeler and spending time with her family. Survivors, besides the husband, include two sons, Gary (Pam) Abernathy, Kingman and James (Connie) Abernathy, Veedersburg; a daughter, Ramona (Rick) Strawser, Danville, Ill.; a sister, Betty (Jim) Davis, Covington; five grandchildren , Angie Cottrell, Rockville, Lori Abernathy, Bloomingdale, Melissa Guthrie, Westfield, Melanie Abernathy, Kingman, Brandi Moss, West Lebanon; eight great grandchildren: Amanda Shoaf, Ryan Strawser, Jordan Shoaf, Rodney Guthri e, Megan Reissman, Drew Guthrie, Devin Reismann and Wesley Cottrell; and a step grandchild Deaton Cox. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mable Cadman; and grandson Rodney Strawser. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Pastor Paul Kent officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. The family requests memorials be made to Provena USMC Dialysis Unit.
