Fountain County listed its second traffic fatality of the year Saturday with the death of a 10-year-old Veedersburg, R#4, girl who died in a two-car collision 4 miles north of Sterling on US 41.
Loretta Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Young, died en route to Community Hospital from injuries sustained in an accident involving three other members of their family and an Alabama couple.
According to the state police accident report, Donna Young, 21, sister of the victim was enroute south on 41. The automobile which she was driving began skidding for some unknown reason and ran off the road on the right hand side. The automobile swerved back into the line of traffic and was struck broadside by an automobile driven by James A. Watkins, 28, Jasper, Alabama. State police report that the occupants in both vehicles were thrown from their automobiles. Police further stated that had seat belts been utilized the death of the young girl could have been prevented.
Rita Young, 8, sister of the victim, suffered head injuries and was taken to Community Hospital. She was later transferred to the Intensive Care Ward in Home Hospital, Lafayette. She is reported in serious condition and has not regained consciousness. Listed in satisfactory condition in Community Hospital are Donna Young with head and chest injuries and Sharon Young, 2, the daughter of the driver with head injuries.
Also listed in satisfactory condition in Home Hospital are James A. Watkins and his wife Sarah Jane, 15. Watkins sustained chest injuries and his wife was admitted with possible fractured pelvis and right leg. State Troops Null and Wood, Deputy Sheriff Art Cruea, Jr investigated. Ambulances from Sever and Fishero funeral homes took victims to hospitals.
Loretta Young was born October 14, 1954 at Community Hospital. Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Young; two sisters, Donna and Rita; a brother, Larry; a niece, Sharon; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Totheroh; paternal grandfather, Mr. Wright Young, Veedersburg; and a great grandmother, Mrs. Viola Hutchison, Mellott.
The body was taken to the Fishero Funeral Home and will be taken to the home of the parents Tuesday. Visitors may come after the noon hour.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Stone Bluff EUB Church with Rev. Conley Rowland officiating. Burial will be in the Osborne Prairie Cemetery.
In other weekend traffic accidents, two persons were injured in a two-car collision 2 miles north of Veedersburg on US 41 at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.
