A 33-year-old Veedersburg man died almost instantly Tuesday night, April 13, when he was struck by a speeding bus as he walked along US-136 just east of Covington.
Killed was Herbert Youkey, Jr., who was walking east on the north side of the road from Covington to Veedersburg. Youkey suffered a skull fracture, an eight inch laceration on his head and fractured shoulders, when he was hit by the bus which was passing a car driven by Jim Lowery of Veediersburg.
Lowery remained with Youkey while the bus driver, C. L. (Dick) Stahl, went on to Veedersburg to notify Indiana State Police. The Bodine and Shelby ambulance from Covington arrived several minutes after the mishap, but the young man was dead. Fountain County Deputy Sheriff Art Cruea, Jr., and State Trooper Lloyd Jennings, of Covington, investigated and pronounced Youkey dead at the scene.
The son of Herbert Youkey, the victim was born July 27, 1931. He lived with his father in Veedersburg. He is also a veteran of the US Army.
The body is at Fishero Funeral Home in Veedersburg where arrangements are incomplete.
