YORK, Dewey

A Lebanon man was killed Monday afternoon in Covington, when he was working on the construction of the new Fountain Trust Co. building on Third Street.

Dewey York, 50, was thought to have been knocked or jarred off the foundation of a boom on a crane where he was standing. He was helping another worker to set steel beams on a concrete foundation of the new building when he was jarred off and fell head first about 10 feet down, landing on the concrete floor of the basement.

According to Fountain Co. Coroner, Dr. Walter C. Kinser of Veedersburg, the lever control on the crane lowered one of the steel beams quite rapidly and as the beam fell, it either struck York in the head or hit the landing area where he was standing, knocking him to a death fall. He was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m., about a half hour after the accident occurred.

The work of laying the steel beams had just started that morning. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death and the insurance company connected with the construction firm working at the location will investigate the malfunctioning of the crane lever.
