WINGATE — Harry E. Verhey, age 84 a long time Wingate resident, died Friday, August 1st, 2008 at 2:33 a.m. in Crawfordsville following a lengthy illness. Harry was born August 23, 1923 in Fountain County on the Murdock Farm just south of Attica the son of August and Mary Serie Verhey. He graduated from Attica High School in 1941. On December 12, 1947 he was married to Barbara Jean Lester in Lafayette, she survives. They moved to the Wingate area in 1957. Harry retired as manager of Yeddo Ag. Service. Previously he had been employed by Stone Bluff Ag. Service, Decker's Hog Market, Veedersburg Livestock Auction and Harrison Steel Castings. Harry had farmed just outside of Wingate until 1971. He was a former member of St. Xavier Catholic Church in Attica, a member of Indiana Farm Bureau and formerly Indiana Rural Youth. Harry had also served as a volunteer fireman for the Wingate Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed playing horseshoes, family fishing trips and family gatherings. Surviving along with his wife are two daughters: Marsha Applegate of Romney, Marlena Verhey of Plainfield. Four sons: Marvin (Candy) Verhey of Danville, Melvin (Sharon) Verhey of Crawfordsville, Michael (Cindy) Verhey of Attica, Marlin (Denise) Verhey of Lafayette. A sister-in-law Thelma Verhey of Attica, a brother Howard (Helen) Verhey of Attica. 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Lawrence, Bernard, Ralph and Frances. Three Sisters: Louise Cooper, Irene Spence and Christine Pearson. Great-grandson Hayden Verhey and daughter-in-law Kathy Verhey. Funeral services were held at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, Monday, August 4 with Pastor Duane Mycroft officiating, burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wingate. Friends may call at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, 4-7 p.m. Sunday.  Funeral  services will be held at Family & Friends of Wingate, 11 a.m. Monday Aug 4, 2008, with Pastor Duane Mycroft officiating. Interment Greenlawn Cemetery< Wingate. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Thelma Verhey of Attica. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Lawrence, Bernard, Ralph and Frances, three sisters, Louise Cooper, Irene Spence and Christine Pearson; a great grandson, Hayden Verhey and daughter-in-law, Kathy Verhey.  Memorial contributions may be best directed to Pleasant Hill United Church of Christ (Wingate) or St. Elizabeth Hospice.
