NEWTOWN — Paul R. Townsend, 85, formerly of Newtown, died at 8:30 p.m. July 26, 1999, in the Culver Union Hospital, Crawfordsville. He had been ill for the past three weeks. Born Oct. 16, 1913, near Speed in Clark County, he was the son of Frank and Ella Stout Townsend. He married Mildred B. McCauley April 1, 1934, near Newtown. She survives. He worked as a crane operator for Harrison Steel Casting Co. He retired in 1980 after nearly 40 years service. He had attented Newtown Community Church and was a former member and past president of the Newtown Cemetery Association. He was also a former member of the Newtown Town Board. He enjoyed raising a vegetable garden. Survivors include: son, Jerry (Diana) Townsend, Hillsboro; daughters, Martha (Gregory) Bell, Crawfordsville, and Veneta (James) Hazlewood, Lafayette; brother, Marvin Townsend, Veedersburg; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. July 30 at Maus Funeral Home in Attica with Rev. Mike Parks officiating. Burial was in the Newtown Cemetery. – jlr
