HILLSBORO -- Charles Lee Tanner, 76, retired school teacher, died at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday at Culver Hospital in Crawfordsville. He had been in failing health for three and a half years and hospitalized for only a short period. Tanner had taught in area schools for 30 years. He was a teacher at Yeddo, Covington, Mellott, Albany, Crawfordsville and Williamsport. A graduate of Mellott High School, he attended Central Normal College at Danville, Ind., and Indiana State University. He was a member of the Mellott United Church of Christ. A son of Thomas R. and Iola Yount Tanner, he was born March 18, 1891, near Hillsboro. He was married on Dec. 19, 1915, to Nina Allen who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James R. (Lewanda) Rice of Rt. 3, Veedersburg and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virgina Crowe, and a grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Crumley-Williams Funeral Home in Hillsboro with Rev. Charles Kraft officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
