 Orville D. Strader of Williamsport, age 84, died Monday evening, November 15, in Williamsport Community Hospital. He was born near Veedersburg, June 8, 1898, the son of Oliver H. and Alice J. Perrin Strader. A member of the First Presbyterian Church at Gainesville, Georgia, he was a 50 year member of Attica Masonic Lodge, a member of Williamsport American Legion Post, Theta Chi fraternity and the Optimist Club in Gainesville.

 A graduate of Veedersburg High School, he attended Purdue University and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Wabash College in 1922. In 1927, he received his master’s degree from the University of Chicago. He taught for 53 years in schools in Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky and Georgia. An Army veteran of both world wars, he was a field director for American Red Cross in Europe for 13 months. His hobby was the study of the life of Abraham Lincoln and he had written four books on the subject.   Survivors include a sister, Virginia Carey of Indianapolis.     Funeral services were held this morning (Thursday) at Fisher Funeral Home in Williamsport with Rev. Don Williams officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery near Veedersburg.

Williamsport - Orville D. Strader, 84, schoolteacher and author of 321 E 4th St died at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Community Hospital, Williamsport where he had been a patient since Oct 30.  Born near Veedersburg he had lived in Gainesville, GA 21 years, moving to Williamsport in 1961.  He graduated from Williamsport HS in 1918 and attended Purdue University. He received his BA degree in history at Wabash College and a master's degree in 1927 at the University of Chicago.  Mr. Strader authored four books on the life of Abraham Lincoln.  He also taught high school in Gainesville 53 years and American History several years in Ohio, Illinois and Kentucky.  An Army  veteran of World War I and II, he had also served as field director for American Red Cross in Europe.  He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Gainesvlle where he was Sunday School teacher, American Legion Post 259, Williamsport, Optimist Club in Gainesville, Theta Chi fraternity and was a 50-year-member of F&AM Lodge 708 in Attica.  He also was a former Rotarian. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Carey of Indianapolis. - kbz
