NEWTOWN - Mrs. Hattie M. Stokes, age 81, of near Newtown died at 12:45 p.m, Monday, May 5, at the Community Hospital in Williamsport  where she had been a patient the past eight days.  She had been in declining health the last four months.
Mrs. Stokes was a lifelong resident of Fountain County and a member of the Newtown First United Methodist Church.  She also was a member of the Newtown LaChorale Music Club.
She was born Nov. 12, 1887, near Newtown, the daughter of George and Viola Hatton Shultz.  She attended the Newtown school system.  She was first married in 1909 to Clark Dinwiddie, who died in 1918. She was married in 1923 to Russell Stokes,
who survives. In addition to her first, husband, Mrs. Stokes was preceded in death by four brothers, three sisters and two granddaughters.
Survivors include two sons, George W. Dinwiddie of Shipsewana and Clark Dinwiddie of near Attica; one daughter, Mrs, Albert Cushman of near Attica; one brother, Lester Shultz of near Attica; one sister, Mrs, Anna Watts of Waynetown; 10 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Newtown First United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Arthur Schenck officiated and burial was in Newtown Cemetery.
