STILWELL, George W. - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

George W. Stilwell died at Covington, Indiana, Aug 6, 1881 of typhoid fever, aged 25 years, 11 months and 24 days. The deceased was born in this County, on a farm; shortly after his father, John D. Stilwell moved to Waveland, where he died when George was only 7 years old. Some 3 years ago, his mother moved to this city, and George remained here until about two years ago, at which time he went to Covington and commenced the study of law in the office of his uncle, HH Stilwell and made such progress that about 6 months ago he was appointed deputy prosecuting attorney for Fountain Co, filling the office with ability. Up to his death he was considered an able debater in public. His last speech was made on the 4th of July at Covington, and was considered by those who heard it a masterly effort. His remains passed through this city last Monday, enroute for Waveland, where he was buried. The following are the names of the committee which was appointed by Covington Lodge No. 21 IOOF [Independent Order of Odd Fellows] of which order he was an honored member, to accompany the remains. James W. Weldon; John W. Patterson; Linn Spining; George Smith; Edward Copner; Charles Miller and John Stevenson; the committee was assisted by FN Johnson. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Pearcy, at the ME Church, after which the remains were taken in charge by the mystic order who laid down by the side of his father and brother in the old burial ground, to await that day when the just shall be made perfect. Thus passed away another young life full of promise.
