ATTICA — Paul "Harold” Stewart Jr., 68, 1401 Kelley Ave., Attica, died at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in the emergency room of the Livingston Regional Hospital, Livingston, Tenn., after suffering a heart attack while vacationing with family. Born Jan. 24, 1931 in Attica, he was the son of Paul and Mary Elizabeth Swaney VanLaere Stewart. He married Emiko Furmitsu in Osaka, Japan in 1951. He was raised in Attica and attended Attica High School. He was a career military serviceman in the U. S. Army for 22-years retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer Second Class. He saw action in the Korean and Viet Nam wars. While in the service, he received a post secondary education degree. Following his retirement in 1970, he was employed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis where he was supervisor for the finance center and commissary. In 1972 he started Stewart & Sons Construction Co. in Indianapolis and worked there until 1974, when he suffered a disabling heart attack. In 1979 he relocated back to Attica. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 3318 and member of American Legion Post 52, both of Attica; and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 52. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, country music and was an avid bingo player. Survivors include: sons, Harold Stewart, Atlanta, Ga., Bobby Stewart, California; Raymond, John and Richard Stewart, all of Indianapolis; daughters, Ema (Gregory) Wardall, Hoopeston, Ill., Mary Stewart and Cashi (Bryan) Oakley, both of Lafayette; sisters, Pearl Beasley, Attica, Betty Clawson, Ft. Wayne, Edda VanLaere, Linden; brothers, Art Stewart and Paul Bill Booe, both of Attica, Robert Stewart, Del City, Okla.; step-sisters, Marjorie (Robert) Ridge, Lafayette, Garnet (Leland) Flynn, Somerset, Ky., Geraldine Lamie, Pompano Beach, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepbrothers, Elmer Eugene Wagoner and Archie Stewart. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday at Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with Pastor Jeff Floyd officiating. Burial with military gravesite services were in Riverside Cemetery, Attica. Memorial contributions can be made to the Disabled American Veterans or the American Heart Association. – jlr
