John A. Stephens, 55, life-long resident of Richland Township died at 10 o’clock Monday night at St. Elizabeth’s hospital in Lafayette where he was rushed Monday to undergo an operation after becoming suddenly ill Sunday. His condition was such that an operation could not be performed. Cancer of the stomach was given as the cause of his death. Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon at the home. Burial was made in the Murry cemetery southeast of Mellott. The deceased is survived by his widow and three daughters, Mrs. Glen Myers of Veedersburg; Mrs. Vernon Babb of Momence and Mrs. Reuben Nance of Mellott. There are three brothers, Sylvester of Danville; Augustus of Anderson Ind and Warren Stephens of Wingate. Mrs. John Howard of Veedersburg is a sister. Mr. Stephens had been a resident of Mellott and vicinity practically all his life and was engaged in farming. - kbz
