Hillsboro - Mrs. Mary M. Starnes, 81, die at 4 p.m. Monday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville where she had been a patient about two weeks. Born March 2, 1879 in Richland Twp, she was the daughter of Thomas R. and Margaret Covalt Tanner. When Mrs. Starnes was four years old her mother died and she was reared in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Carter of Hillsboro. She married Lewis E. Starnes of Hillsboro, March 13, 1896, and they lived their entire married life in this community. Mrs. Starnes was a teacher of piano during her early life. She was a member of the Hillsboro Christian Church and a former member of the Fountain County Home Demonstration Club choir. She was a past worthy matron in Fern Chapter OES and last year received a 50-year pin. She also was a charter member of the Hillsboro Harmony Club. Mrs. Starnes was active in all of these organizations until her health began failing in 1953. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Bounell of Waynetown; a half brother, Chrles Tanner of Hillsboro; two grandsons, James R. Bounell of Waynetown and Harry L. Bounnell of Louisville, Ky; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Starnes. Funeral rites are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Crumley Funeral Home here with Rev. John Coil, pastor of the Christian Church in charge. He will be assisted by Rev. Ronald Carlson. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
